  • Good temperature for mountain rhyolite
Buckbarrow is a sunny, multi-tiered cliff commanding exceptional views over Wasdale and Wastwater, carved from featured volcanic rock. The south-facing aspect combines with relatively low altitude to make this one of the warmest and fastest-drying crags in the western fells. Grade distribution covers a balanced mix of traditional routes from Severe to technical E-grades, featuring delicate slab work and steep wall climbing. Central Route and Witch stand out as high-quality offerings on solid, well-featured rock tiers. The approach requires a steep fifteen-to-twenty minute climb directly from the roadside parking near Nether Wasdale. Dense bracken growth in late summer can obscure lower paths, making early season visits preferable.
