About Napes (Great Gable)

The Napes is the historic south face of Great Gable, a long line of ridges, buttresses and pinnacles of rough Borrowdale volcanic rock that is widely regarded as the birthplace of British rock climbing. Napes Needle was famously soloed by W.P. Haskett-Smith in 1886, an ascent often cited as the moment rock climbing gained its independence from mountaineering. The south-facing aspect and open ridge structure mean the routes drain and dry quickly by mountain-crag standards, though at 750m the rock stays cold outside summer. Grade coverage runs from V Diff scrambling ridges (Needle Ridge, Arrowhead Ridge, Abbey Buttress) to sustained HVS/E1 wall climbing on Tophet Wall. Approach is via the Climbers' Traverse from Sty Head — around 1h 45m from Wasdale Head or 2 hours from Seathwaite in Borrowdale.
