About Carn Gowla

Carn Gowla presents a dark, formidable sea cliff setting near St Agnes, featuring sweeping slate and killas killas shale precipices. The rock character consists of complex, fragile slate bands interbedded with steep quartz seams, requiring delicate footwork and careful gear placement. Facing northwest, the cliff stays shaded until late afternoon, drying steadily under wind but retaining dampness in shadowed gullies. Route choices are strictly for experienced trad teams, offering serious, atmospheric E-grade testpieces like Mercury and Iron Horse. The approach requires a twenty-minute coastal walk from Trevaunance Cove or Chapel Porth followed by a exposed abseil descent. Loose rock on unclimbed upper tiers and tidal cut-offs at the base demand thorough preparation and sound helmet habits.
