Pentire Head (Great Cliff) is one of the UK's most famous sea cliffs, offering towering precipices of dark green pillow lava slate near Polzeath. The rock is exceptionally steep, compact, and featured with sharp crimps, subtle side-pulls, and atmospheric crack systems. Facing northwest into the Atlantic Ocean, the cliff receives late afternoon sun, drying steadily under heavy coastal winds, though lower routes collect ocean spray. The crag is world-renowned for hard, bold traditional climbing, hosting legendary testpieces like Darkinbad the Brightdayler and Cobra. The approach takes twenty minutes along the coastal path from Pentireglaze car park followed by a long abseil to low-level ledges. Severe tidal restrictions, huge Atlantic swells, and friable top-outs make this a serious venue.
