About Cresciano

The historic granite-gneiss hillside above Cresciano village — the boulders stretch north along a wooded ridge toward Osogna. This is where Fred Nicole opened Dreamtime in November 2000, the world's first 8C, and the sector below it (Sasso della Predarèsc) is now a pilgrimage site. Rock is Alpine gneiss with a rough, rapidly-abrading texture — locals call it granite but topoguru and specialist guidebooks are clear it is gneiss. Cresciano sits noticeably lower than nearby Chironico or Brione so stays warmer in shoulder season — the winter bouldering destination in Ticino. Same sandstone-family rule does not apply: gneiss is impermeable and dries fast.
