About Culm Coast (Blackchurch Rock)

The Arch (E1 5b), Blackchurch Wall (E2 5b), Chevron Route (VS)","Culm Coast (Blackchurch Rock) is a famous, dramatic sea arch and chevron-folded rock formation near Clovelly in North Devon. The rock character features spectacular folded Culm sandstone and shale chevrons with thin crack lines, razor crimps, and fragile horizontal seams. Facing west into the Atlantic Ocean, the formation catches afternoon sun and dries steadily under heavy coastal winds, though sea spray settles on lower routes. The climbing is strictly for adventurous traditional teams, offering bold E-grade testpieces and traversals like The Arch. The approach involves a thirty-minute walk down wooded valleys and coastal paths from Brownsham car park. Severe tidal timing and friable rock demand high self-sufficiency.
