Dinorwic Slate Quarry (Vivian) is one of the most accessible and celebrated sectors in the Llanberis slate network, offering clean, slate slab and wall climbing around a deep flooded pit. The smooth, purple-grey slate is highly compact, relying on razor-sharp crimps, delicate wire placements, and subtle friction footholds. Facing east, Vivian catches early morning sun but falls into shadow by early afternoon, though its quick-drying slate surface sheds water rapidly after rainfall. The climbing spans low-grade sport routes to technical trad testpieces, with classics like Mental Asymmetry and Comes the Dog providing technical slab sequences. Access is straightforward, requiring a five-minute flat walk along tarmac tracks directly from the National Slate Museum car park in Padarn Country Park. Climbers should remain aware of potential loose slate fragments near top-outs and respect heritage railway safety fencing.
