About Dove Crag

Dove Crag is one of the most formidable high-altitude mountain cliffs in the eastern fells, set high above Dovedale on rough volcanic rock. Facing east, the crag gets early morning sun, but its high, mountain-corrie position leaves deep overhangs dark, damp, and prone to severe seepage. The cliff is celebrated for steep, intimidating traditional climbing dominated by massive roofs, steep corners, and fierce E-grades. Classics like Extol and Fast Castle stand as absolute mountain testpieces demanding fitness and sound climbing strategy. The approach requires a long, arduous sixty-to-ninety minute mountain walk up from Patterdale. Extreme exposure, rapid weather shifts, and severe cold make good weather forecasting crucial.
