About Scrubby Crag

Scrubby Crag sits isolated high in the wild upper recesses of Rydal Head, offering dark, rugged volcanic rock in an alpine-like atmosphere. Facing north, the cliff sees virtually no sunlight, remaining cold and prone to persistent seepage throughout most of the year. Route selection focuses almost exclusively on hard, serious traditional climbs with a strong emphasis on sustained finger crack jamming and steep face work. Routes like Kilnsey Crack offer intense, remote mountain traditional climbing on solid rock faces. The approach involves a long, strenuous seventy-five minute mountain hike up from the Rydal valley. Its extreme isolation, cold shade, and difficult mountain environment mean it sees very few visits outside warm summer heatwaves.
