About Eagle Crag (Buttermere)

Eagle Crag sits above Grey Crag at the head of Birkness Combe, a steep and imposing north-east-facing mountain crag of Borrowdale volcanic rock steeped in Lakeland climbing history. Grade coverage is heavier than at neighbouring Grey Crag, running from VS through the mid-E grades on steep walls, corners, and improbable buttress lines. The shaded high-corrie aspect and 580m altitude mean the routes are notoriously slow to come into condition — a proper dry spell in summer is essential. Approach is 1h 45m from Gatesgarth Farm up into Birkness Combe, sharing the walk-in with Grey Crag.
