About Eagle Crag (Buttermere)

Eagle Crag sits above Grey Crag at the head of Birkness Combe, a steep and imposing north-east-facing mountain crag of Borrowdale volcanic rock steeped in Lakeland climbing history. The signature route is Eagle Front (VS 4c), a seven-pitch 150m adventure widely regarded as one of the finest routes ever pioneered in the Lake District. Grade coverage is heavier than at neighbouring Grey Crag, running from VS through the mid-E grades on steep walls, corners, and improbable buttress lines. The shaded high-corrie aspect and 580m altitude mean the routes are notoriously slow to come into condition — a proper dry spell in summer is essential. Approach is 1h 45m from Gatesgarth Farm up into Birkness Combe, sharing the walk-in with Grey Crag.
