About Elgol (Suidhe Biorach)

Suidhe Biorach is a south-facing Jurassic sandstone sea cliff below the village of Elgol on the southern tip of Skye — one of the sunniest and driest crags on the island thanks to its aspect and its position in the rain shadow of the Cuillin. The rock is hard, quartz-rich sandstone with positive pockets, sharp horizontal edges, and clean vertical crack systems that take excellent gear, and single-pitch routes typically run twenty to thirty metres. Facing due south over the Sound of Sleat, the cliff catches direct sun through the day and dries fast once the wind is up, giving it a reputation as one of the best wet-weather bail options on Skye when the Cuillin gabbro is out of condition. Approach is a fifteen-minute walk along the clifftop path south of Elgol jetty.
