About Gordale Scar
Gordale Scar is a narrowing limestone gorge with a waterfall at its head, so conditions are all about seepage rather than rain on the day. The steep, leaning walls stay dry in a shower, but after a wet spell water comes through the rock and certain lines, such as the peg pockets on Cave Route Right and the corner of Face Route, can stay wet long after the weather turns. The gorge is sheltered from wind, which means damp air lingers too. Summer and early autumn after a dry spell are the reliable window. A busy public footpath runs through the gorge beneath many routes, and rockfall is an ever-present risk. Take great care not to dislodge anything onto walkers, and consider climbing early or midweek. Voluntary bird-nesting restrictions for ravens and peregrines apply in spring across the Malham area, so check the BMC RAD.
