About Great Head
Great Head is Acadia's advanced-only sea-cliff — an east-facing Cadillac Mountain Granite headland at the north end of Sand Beach on Mount Desert Island, ten minutes' walk on the Great Head Trail. The cliffs are accessed by rappel and hold routes primarily in the 5.10+ range on the same pink coarse-grained granite as Otter Cliffs. Mountain Project's top-ranked classics are Full Sail (5.6), Morning Glory (5.8+), Head Arete (5.10+), and The FishScale (5.12d). Low-tide-only access to the cave section. Open Atlantic exposure keeps the wall breezy but wave-splash and fog keep the base wet — treat seepage as medium. Acadia National Park entry pass required ($35/vehicle, $20/person, $30/motorcycle for 7 days; cashless park). The 2026 Acadia peregrine closures cover Precipice, Jordan Cliffs, Valley Cove, and Penobscot East — Great Head is NOT closed. Much less traffic than Otter Cliffs; June through October is the practical season.
