About Harrison's Rocks

Never climb here when the rock is wet or damp: Southern Sandstone has a thin hard crust over soft sand, and wet climbing causes irreversible damage. Harrison's faces south-west, but it sits in deciduous woodland close to the rock, so it stays damp and green longer than the other sandstone crags. After prolonged rain it can take several days or more to come back into condition, where Bowles is usually first to dry. The BMC owns the crag and has been thinning the canopy to let in more light and air. The rock is too soft for leader-placed gear, so climbing is top-rope or bouldering only: rig a static rope from the bolted anchors with the karabiner hanging over the edge, and keep moving ropes off the rock. Pay-and-display parking (Forestry England) is a short walk from the crag, with toilets and a small seasonal campsite. Don't cross the private fields west of the rocks.
