About Linville Gorge — Shortoff Mountain
Shortoff Mountain is Linville Gorge's serious multi-pitch venue at the southern end of the Wilderness — an adventurous quartzite wall with crack systems interspersed with wild horizontals and huge just-out-of-reach horizontal jugs. Requires strong gear placement and self-anchored belays. Some sections carry lichen from rare climbing. Peregrine falcon nesting closure Jan 15 – Aug 15 covers the main West Face most years; specifics vary annually — check USFS Grandfather Ranger District / carolinaclimbers.org before travelling. Free USFS access. SW exposure makes autumn perfect (closure limits spring options). Quartzite dries fast.
