Lochnagar is a magnificent granite mountain corrie in Royal Deeside, featuring sweeping buttresses and steep gullies above a dark tarn. The granite is rough and highly featured, giving secure jam holds and reliable gear on open ridges, though gullies hold water. Facing north and northeast, the cliff remains shaded most of the day, resulting in low rock temperatures and slow drying after rain. The venue is world-renowned for classic traditional mountain routes, with Eagle Ridge standing as one of Scotland's ultimate VS ridges. The approach requires a sustained, two-hour mountain walk from the Spittal of Glenmuick car park. Extreme mountain exposure, sudden drops in temperature, and long descents require careful mountain planning.
