About Pass of Ballater

Pass of Ballater is a highly accessible granite crag nestled in oak woodland near Ballater in Royal Deeside. The coarse pink granite offers clean vertical walls, sharp jam cracks, and technical arêtes with reliable natural protection. Facing south at low altitude, the crag captures abundant sunshine and dries quickly, offering one of the most reliable crags in the eastern Highlands. The grade range is extensive, running from lower-grade trad cracks up to advanced E-grade wall climbs, led by classic lines like The Needle and Salamander. The approach is trivial, taking under five minutes along clear woodland trails directly from roadside parking. Ticks and midges can be present in mid-summer, though winter and spring days are often crisp and sunny.
