Moughton Scar is a vast, wild limestone escarpment overlooking Crummackdale near Austwick. The rock consists of ancient, highly pocketed gray limestone with sweeping terraces, steep corners, and bold vertical faces. Facing southwest across open moorland, the scar catches afternoon sun and dries rapidly in moorland breezes. The climbing is traditional and adventurous, offering quiet routes mostly in the Severe to E3 grade band. Classic climbs like Moughton Wall showcase the wild mountain atmosphere of the venue. The approach requires a scenic 30-minute moorland hike from Austwick village. Upland exposure and remote location demand self-reliance and weather preparation.
