Rivelin Edge is an extensive gritstone cliff overlooking the Rivelin Valley west of Sheffield, famous for its free-standing needle structure. The rock consists of high-quality, dark gritstone with crisp edges and steep crack lines. Facing northwest, the crag remains in shade for most of the day, catching only late evening summer sun, which makes it slow to dry in damp conditions. Climbing style focuses on steep, strenuous crack climbing and delicate face routes, concentrated mainly in the VS to E3 range. Iconic classics include the extraordinary summit route on the Rivelin Needle and Croton Oil. Access is via a fifteen-minute uphill walk through woodland paths from the A57 roadside parking. Cold conditions and slow-drying rock due to the northwest aspect are the main factors to prepare for.
