About Wharncliffe Crags

Wharncliffe Crags is a historically significant gritstone escarpment stretching for over a mile above the Don Valley north of Sheffield. The rock is dark, solid gritstone with strong vertical jointing and deep chimney systems where UK trad climbing history was forged. Facing west, the crag receives good afternoon sunshine and dries reasonably fast, though tree cover at the base can trap moisture in specific sectors. The climbing offers a vast range of traditional routes from easy scrambles to hard E-grades, emphasizing classic chimney technique, hand jamming, and wall climbing. Great classics include Puttrell's Progress and Himalayan Slice. Reaching the edge takes roughly fifteen minutes along forest tracks from the Glen Howe or Deepcar access points. Navigating the sheer length of the crag and finding specific sectors is the main logistical consideration.
