Shelter Stone Crag dominates the head of Loch Avon in the high Cairngorms, offering monumental multi-pitch mountain traditional routes. The granite rock is granite of the highest order, boasting huge vertical corners, clean arêtes, and horizontal roof systems with stellar gear. Facing north at an altitude above 900 metres, the crag receives practically no direct sun, keeping temperatures cold and drainage routes damp. The route selection caters almost exclusively to experienced trad climbers, with iconic historical lines like The Needle and The Steeple drawing climbers nationwide. The approach demands a strenuous two-to-three hour mountain traverse over the Cairngorm plateau from the Coire Cas car park. Navigating bad weather on the high plateau and managing sudden cold fronts are the main challenges.
