About Smith Rock

Smith Rock is Oregon's most famous sport-climbing destination and the birthplace of modern American sport climbing, tucked into a spectacular canyon carved by the Crooked River near Terrebonne. The welded volcanic tuff gives pocketed, endurance-heavy walls that stay bulletproof in the Central Oregon desert — Smith gets under nine inches of rain a year and dries within hours of a shower. Classic routes span every grade: To Bolt or Not To Be (5.14a), Chain Reaction (5.12c), Wherever I May Roam (5.9), and the summit of Monkey Face. Spring and autumn are prime — summer highs regularly break 35°C, and midwinter mornings can be frigid before the south-facing Dihedrals warm up. Golden eagle and peregrine closures run mid-January to early August on named formations — check Oregon State Parks signage on arrival.
