Access
(full BLM closure): entire climbing area and upper approach trail closed January 15 – August 31 annually for golden eagle nesting. Fines apply. Community compliance is 100%.
Bird ban (01-15 to 08-31)
Full climbing closure for golden eagle nesting — entire climbing area and upper approach trail closed. BLM Prineville District enforces.
Trout Creek is Oregon's answer to Indian Creek — a basalt canyon of vertical splitter cracks above the Deschutes River, an hour north of Smith Rock. The BLM-managed area holds over 130 routes concentrated in the 5.10–5.12 range, with a growing list of world-class 5.13 cracks on the main wall. Sixty Feet Under (5.10c), Gold Rush (5.11a), and Air Show (5.11c) are the must-tick moderates. The Central Oregon high desert keeps the columns dry year-round in principle, but Trout Creek's defining feature is a long annual raptor closure: golden eagles nest here from January 15 through August 31 and the entire climbing area — not just individual routes — is closed. Post-closure fall and early winter are the classic season.
