The Cioch (Skye) is an iconic, slabby triangular overhanging projection perched high on the Coire Lagan flank of Sgurr Alasdair in the Cuillin hills. The rock consists of rough, high-friction gabbro interspersed with basalt dykes, providing sharp holds, pristine jam cracks, and exceptional friction. Facing east at mountain altitude, the crag gets morning sunlight but remains exposed to cold mountain draughts, requiring a period of clear weather to dry fully. Route selection caters to traditional mountain climbers, offering famous multi-pitch routes ranging from atmospheric Moderate scrambles to E-grade testpieces like Integrity. The approach involves a strenuous, ninety-minute mountain trek up through Coire Lagan from the Glenbrittle campsite car park. Loose scree in the approach corrie and complex mountain navigation during sudden weather changes are critical considerations.
