About Trowbarrow Quarry

Trowbarrow Quarry is a disused Carboniferous Urswick Limestone pit near Silverdale, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Local Nature Reserve owned by Lancaster City Council. This is a strictly traditional venue — no bolts have been placed in the quarry, and abseiling, top-roping and lowering off Main Wall are prohibited to protect the SSSI geological features. Climbers must walk down after topping out. The Main Wall carries the famous crack lines including Jean Jeanie and Coral Sea, and the whole quarry has ~240 routes across trad and bouldering. Wooded shelter keeps the base sheltered from wind but slows drying in the deep cracks after wet spells. Approach is under ten minutes from the reserve car park. Jackdaws nest in the cracks in season, and Main Wall is subject to a slow ongoing rotation — inspect gear placements carefully.
