About The Nautilus (Vedauwoo)

The Nautilus is Vedauwoo's iconic centrepiece formation — named for the large nautilus-shell-shaped roof on top, holding 138 documented routes on the famously coarse Sherman Granite. Sherman Granite is Middle Proterozoic (1.43 billion years old per Wyoming State Geological Survey) and contains huge feldspar crystals with 'scalpel-like edges' — Vedauwoo climbing is genuinely hand-shredding, and tape gloves are standard equipment. The area is legendary for offwidth climbing and hand-jamming — 'widely considered one of North America's greatest crack climbing venues'. Friday the 13th (5.10a/b, 3p) is the flagship long moderate. 5-minute approach from the paved Vedauwoo Recreation Area road (USFS fee area).
