About Weem Crags

Weem Crags is one of Perthshire's flagship sport venues, a series of five south-facing schist buttresses set on a wooded hillside above Weem village near Aberfeldy. The rock is unusual for Scottish schist in that it relies more on positive edges, sharp crimps, and technical slabs than on the pocketed style typical of the rock type. Facing south under an open forest canopy, the tiers act as a sun trap and, thanks to the tree cover breaking direct rain, remain climbable through more of the year than most exposed schist venues. Grades span from Fr5 on the friendlier lower buttresses up to Fr7b+ on the steepest side walls, with headline lines including The Long Good Friday, The Screaming Weem, and High Pitched Scream. The approach takes ten to fifteen minutes up a well-established woodland trail from the parking layby beside the village. Wet moss on shaded lower routes and midges on still summer evenings are the main considerations.
