The Whangie is a unique geological feature on Auchineden Hill near Kilpatrick, consisting of a narrow, detached chasm of volcanic rock. The rock is coarse, jointed basalt with short walls, squeeze chimneys, and clean horizontal breaks for wire placements. Because the main walls form a deep, enclosed slot, aspects vary from shaded interior walls to sunlit outer edges, with inner walls seeping long after rain. The climbing provides short traditional routes, chimneys, and bouldering problems from VDiff to E-grades, with Pinnacle Route being a primary classic. The approach takes twenty-five minutes along an established hill path starting from the Queens View car park off the A809. Lingering dampness in the inner chasm and cold wind funnelling through the slot are the main features.
