About Wolf Rock

Wolf Rock is the largest monolith in Oregon — a massive andesite plug rising above the Blue River Reservoir on the western slope of the Cascades, about thirty-five minutes east of Eugene via Highway 126. This is adventure trad country: the flagship route Barad-dûr (III 5.11a or 5.9 A2) climbs 900 feet of steep, dirty, committing rock, and Pooh Corner (V 5.9 A3) is Oregon's only long aid climb. The Southeast Face is the primary venue but every aspect gets climbed. Best season is June through September; the rock seeps water even into August in some areas and heavy snow closes the road for much of the year. This is not a cragging destination — expect long approaches, questionable fixed gear, and a genuine mountaineering feel. Northwest Forest Pass required.
