Woodhouse Scar, located on the hillside overlooking Halifax, is a long, accessible gritstone quarry edge offering a dense concentration of traditional climbs and bouldering. The rock is typical urban gritstone, featuring crisp horizontal breaks, jam cracks, and positive face holds on sound rock. Facing south at a modest elevation, the crag receives maximum sunlight throughout the day and dries remarkably fast after wet weather, making it a reliable option year-round. The climbing caters well to entry-level and intermediate leaders, offering a broad spread of traditional routes from Diff to lower E-grades, with classics like The Flake drawing regular visits. The approach is swift, taking only five minutes from nearby residential parking via established park footpaths. The paramount consideration is urban crag awareness; checking holds for glass or litter near top-out ledges is advisable.
