About Broughton Bluff
Broughton Bluff is Portland's home crag — roughly a dozen basalt cliff bands overlooking the Sandy River in Lewis and Clark State Recreation Site, twenty minutes east of the city. Around 200 routes span 5.4 topropes on the Hanging Gardens to 5.14 leads on Bat Wall, with hard classics like Dracula (5.11d), Peer Pressure (5.11c), and the moderate favourite Physical Graffiti (5.10c). The riverside setting is low, forested and wet by PNW standards: winters are damp and soggy across most of the cliff bands, so late spring, summer, and autumn are the reliable seasons — only strong climbers on the steepest overhangs can salvage decent winter conditions. Oregon State Parks day-use fee applies ($10 daily or annual pass); no known raptor closure at present.
