About Rocky Butte
Rocky Butte is Portland's most accessible crag — a former basalt quarry in Northeast Portland just off I-205, ten minutes from downtown. The columnar quarry walls hold about 50 routes ranging from 5.5 to 5.11, including Peer Pressure (5.10b), Trivial Pursuit (5.10a), and the hard classic Cro-Magnon (5.11d). Approach is via the 82nd Street exit off I-84. The northeast-facing quarry stays damp through Portland's rainy season and is climbable primarily June through September — outside that window, only occasional dry stretches make it worthwhile. Noisy from I-205, dirty in places, and occasionally overgrown — but perfect for weeknight sessions and the odd weekend afternoon when you can't drive out to Broughton or the Gorge. Free parking; no permits required.
