About Cathedral Peak

Cathedral Peak is Tuolumne's iconic alpine spire — a 3227m granite thumb of Cathedral Peak Granodiorite (the coarse phenocryst-rich granite that defines Tuolumne). John Muir made the first ascent in 1869 via what is now called the John Muir Route (easy 5th class); today the Southeast Buttress (5.6, 5 pitches, over 2,000 MP ascents) is one of California's most-climbed alpine routes and a rite of passage for Yosemite climbers. The route's huge crystal jugs and airy ridge climbing make it feel easier than the grade. Season is dictated by Tioga Road: usually late June through early October. Cathedral Peak is 'a great lightning rod' — afternoon thunderstorms are a real hazard in July/August; start early and be off summit by noon. 3.5-mile approach from Cathedral Lakes trailhead.
