About Chamonix — Le Chapeau

Glacier-polished tawny granite slabs above Le Lavancher, 5km up-valley from Chamonix. Friction climbing in its most demanding form — the rock is smooth, holds are rare, and everything depends on precision footwork and honest re-weighting. Three signature moderate slabs at 4b–5b, 60m, well-bolted; the harder athletic lines are down in the Arveyron gorge below and count among the hardest routes in the valley. South-west facing so afternoon sun, and at 1600m the venue is high enough that morning condensation on humid summer days is a real thing — the fog rule can fire realistically. Views straight across at the west face of the Drus and the Aiguilles de Chamonix. 10–15 minute approach from the Lavancher parking.
