About Chamonix — Les Gaillands

The definitive Chamonix roadside crag by the lake — 130+ pitches on compact gneiss split by numerous cracks, developed in 1928 by Alfred Couttet and his student Roger Frison-Roche as arguably the first climbing school in France. Grades run from 2c up to around 7b but the strength of the venue is the density of routes below 5+, making it the go-to rainy-Chamonix fallback for family groups, novices and instructors. South and south-east facing so the wall dries fast once the sun hits it, and the impermeable gneiss doesn't hold water — but never climb it while genuinely wet, the polished holds turn greasy. Two-minute approach from the roadside car park; coffee bar and a small lake with pedaloes beside the crag. Views out to Mont Blanc and the Bossons glacier.
