Hard sandstone climbs well when dry

Star Wood is one of the principal bouldering and cragging sectors in the Churnet Valley, characterized by soft sandstone bluffs set in dense woodland. The rock is delicate, fine-grained sandstone featuring slopers, compression arêtes, and sandy breaks. Facing multiple directions under a heavy forest canopy, the sector remains shaded, which helps cool summer temps but causes high seepage and very slow drying. Climbing is predominantly bouldering, offering high-class problems across all grade bands. Reach the woods via a ten-minute walk along public footpaths from Oakamoor. Climbers must strictly refrain from climbing when the sandstone is damp to prevent irreversible hold breakage.
