About Clifton / Eagle Bluff
Clifton ("Eagle Bluff") is inland Maine's main sport-climbing area — a granite crag on the Lucerne Granite pluton on the south-facing flank of Peaked Mountain in Clifton, thirty minutes east of Bangor. Mountain Project's top-ranked classics are Bivy Route (5.9), Eagle Direct (5.11a trad), The Eagle's Gift (5.10a), Wheaties (5.10b), and Highlander (5.10b, two pitches). The dense granite dries fast; south aspect and inland setting give a long April–November season. Access is public: the Clifton Climbers Alliance purchased the property in August 2014 with Access Fund support, so the crag is climber-owned and free. Approach from the Route 9 / Route 180 junction, drive 2.6 miles south on Route 180 to the CCA parking areas; 8–15 minute approach depending on which lot you use. Three parking areas — respect the CCA rules posted on-site.
