About Katahdin (South Basin)
Mount Katahdin's South Basin holds Maine's biggest alpine climbing — long granite ridges and buttresses on the Katahdin Granite in the South Basin cirque of Baxter State Park. The Armadillo (5.7, six pitches) is the classic must-tick and one of the finest 5.7 multi-pitches in the East; Flatiron (5.8, two pitches) rounds out the summer rock list. Waterfall Gully (WI4, two pitches) and the multi-pitch Cilley-Barber (WI4, seven pitches) are the winter ice classics. Baxter State Park regulates access strictly: a Day-Use Parking Reservation (DUPR) at $5 is required for Roaring Brook (the South Basin trailhead) with a $15 out-of-state vehicle entry fee on top; reservations open four months in advance at 6 AM ET. Technical climbers MUST register at the Roaring Brook ranger station where rangers inspect gear (a #4 Camalot is required for The Armadillo). Winter climbing needs a separate permit. Bolting, gardening, chipping, and glueing are prohibited. July through early September is the reliable rock window; alpine weather changes fast and afternoons often storm out.
