The Cornice is Chee Dale's premier sport climbing wall, consisting of an immensely long, overhanging limestone wave running along the riverbank. The rock is compact, highly featured limestone crammed with pockets, sidepulls, and powerful roof features. Facing south inside a steep gorge, the upper wall catches sun when the tree canopy allows, drying quickly on open faces while lower pockets hold dampness during humid weather. The climbing style is exceptionally physical, sustained, and pumpy, housing dozens of high-quality sport routes from 6c up to 8b. Famous classics like Pump Action and Ten Percent represent essential Peak District sport ticks. Reaching the wall requires a 15-minute walk along the Chee Dale riverside path from the Miller's Dale parking lot. High river levels following heavy rain represent the single biggest hurdle, as the path and staging area can be underwater.
