About Two Tier Buttress (Chee Dale)

Two Tier Buttress is a major limestone cliff in Chee Dale offering an extensive array of traditional and sport routes spread across two distinct tiers. The rock consists of clean, sound gray limestone with a mixture of sharp finger cracks, pocketed faces, and steep roofs. Facing south across the winding river gorge, the upper tier receives plenty of sunlight and dries fast, while the lower tier stays shaded by riverbank trees. The climbing style is varied, encompassing technical wall moves, bold trad jams, and pumpy sport lines from VS up to E6. Unmissable classics include Anarchy and the technical testpiece Ceramic. Access involves a 15-minute walk along the Chee Dale river trail from Miller's Dale. River flooding can cover the base of the lower tier, making dry water level conditions essential for access.
