Curbar Edge is a dramatic, elevated gritstone crag famous for its imposing height, steep buttresses, and intimidating roof features. The rock consists of rough, high-friction gritstone with bold horizontal breaks and deep fissures. Facing southwest, the crag catches abundant afternoon sun and dries very rapidly, though its lofty position leaves it exposed to strong winds. The climbing style is physical, pumpy, and uncompromising, featuring a vast concentration of mid-to-high E-grade testpieces alongside hard VS and HVS climbs. Unmissable classics include Peapod, File, and Gorhambury. Reach the edge in five to ten minutes via a steep track leading up from the Curbar Gap parking area. The most critical factor is the fierce and physical nature of the routes, which often feel stout for their grade.
