About Whinstone Lee Tor

Whinstone Lee Tor marks the southern terminus of the Derwent Edge ridge, overlooking Ladybower Reservoir. The crag consists of compact gritstone blocks and short walls exposed to the valley below. Facing west, the tor catches brilliant afternoon sun and dries swiftly under the sweeping valley winds. The climbing consists mainly of short, bold trad lines and highball boulder problems with a concentration around the VS to HVS level. The classic Whinstone Rib offers fine moves on immaculate rock. The approach involves a steady 20 to 30 minute uphill walk from the parking laybys near the A57 at Ashopton Bridge. High wind exposure and lack of sheltered staging areas are the main environmental factors to plan around.
