About Exfoliation Dome
Exfoliation Dome is Darrington's biggest rock feature — a 4,000-foot granite dome south of town off the Mountain Loop Highway, described by Fred Beckey as 'quite possibly the most difficult 4,000-foot peak in the state of Washington.' The dome is long and narrow with two main climbing faces: Blueberry Hill on the west (Blueberry Route 5.9, Dark Rhythm 5.10c — the friendly slab-and-crack venue) and the near-vertical Witch Doctor Wall on the east (an aid climber's playground). The northeast face is dirty, brushy, and covered in lichen. No easy way up or down — bring a full trad rack, extra tat for anchors, and comfortable descent shoes. July through September is the reliable season; wet slabs on the west-slope Cascades drain slowly. Approach from Clear Creek Road.
