About Hidden Valley Campground

Hidden Valley Campground is the historic heart of Joshua Tree climbing — a scatter of quartz-monzonite formations (Intersection Rock, The Old Woman, The Blob, Cyclops Rock, Chimney Rock, The Wall, Outhouse Rock, Peewee Rock) arrayed around the campground where American desert climbing was born. Around 199 documented routes packed into a small area, with every formation facing a different direction — chase sun or shade year-round. The Bong (5.4), Mike's Books (5.6), Toe Jam (5.7), Double Cross (5.7+), The Flake (5.8), and Dogleg (5.8+) are the definitive moderate ticks. Coarse quartz monzonite gives bombproof, positive holds with brutal friction that shreds fingertips — bring tape. Prime season is October through April; summer is genuinely dangerous with highs regularly above 40°C. Dries within an hour of the rare desert shower. Timed-entry campground reservations essential in peak season.
