About Hueco Tanks — North Mountain

Daily access is capped by Texas Parks & Wildlife at 70 people per day — 60 advance reservation slots (up to 90 days out, phone 1-512-389-8911) plus 10 same-day walk-in spots that go fast on cool weekends. Every climber watches the mandatory pictograph orientation video on entry — the park is a sacred site with rock art dating back thousands of years, so stay on established trails, no chalk on any panel, and pads must not touch decorated rock. The syenogranite is coarse and abrasive with the signature waterworn pockets ('huecos') everywhere; friction is exceptional in cold, dry desert air but tanks up fast in warm afternoons. At ~1400m in the Chihuahuan Desert, humidity is usually low enough that fog is a non-issue; the real threat is the summer heat (100°F+ May through September). Rock dries within an hour or two of the rare desert shower.
