About Mingulay

Mingulay lies at the very southern end of the Outer Hebridean chain, a small uninhabited island whose sea cliffs hold nearly nine hundred recorded climbs on perfect Lewisian gneiss, with individual crags rising from twenty metres up to a full two hundred and fifty metres — genuine big-wall sea-cliff climbing. The rock is rough, ancient gneiss with excellent friction, positive incuts, and clean crack systems that take reliable gear. Most of the biggest cliffs face west into the full Atlantic, so climbing conditions swing entirely on the weather window, though the constant wind dries the rock fast between showers. Grades run from friendly HS up through world-class E-grades, with Voyage of Faith, The Silkie and Perfect Monsters among the routes that have made the island an international climbing destination. Access is the same expedition-scale trip as neighbouring Pabbay: ferry to Barra then chartered boat, with camping on the island the normal base.
