About Pabbay

Pabbay is a small uninhabited island at the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides that holds some of the most perfect sea-cliff climbing in the UK — over four hundred routes on rough, sound Lewisian gneiss on cliffs that are either steep or very steep, with rock quality that is superb, clean, and takes exceptional gear. Aspects across the island are varied but the biggest sector is a large south-facing wall, and the coastal position with constant Atlantic wind means the rock dries fast once a front passes. Access is a serious expedition: five-hour ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra followed by a chartered fishing-boat drop-off, and camping on the island is the normal way to spend a week or more here.
