About Sron Uladail (Strone Ulladale)

Sron Uladail — Strone Ulladale — is one of the most famous pieces of rock architecture in the British Isles: a great overhanging prow of Lewisian gneiss rising 270 metres above the remote Loch Uladail in the hills of North Harris. The rock is some of the oldest on the planet (up to three billion years) and where the traffic keeps it clean the gneiss offers positive incuts, rough face texture, and solid gear, though remote sectors carry inevitable loose blocks. Facing east and overhanging so steeply that the top overhangs the base by many metres, the crag remains a shelter from westerly rain but seeps in the shaded sections after prolonged wet weather. Grades are firmly extreme, with The Scoop — famously freed at E7 6c by Dave MacLeod and Tim Emmett in the 2010 live BBC broadcast — one of only sixty-one routes in the iconic Hard Rock book. The approach is a serious hour-plus walk from the road along the Uladail track through the wildest hills in the Hebrides.
