About Porth Ysgo

Widely regarded as the best bouldering venue in North Wales — a scattered field of dolerite blocs on a National Trust beach at the tip of the Llŷn Peninsula, near Aberdaron. The rock is coarse-grained coastal dolerite (some call it gabbro) that offers unbeatable friction but is tough on skin in warmer temperatures. Because of its south-west aspect and open sea position, the venue thrives as a winter destination — sun on the beach all day, dry sea breezes, and rock warm enough to climb on when the mountains are frozen out. Many highball problems with barnacled or sloping landings, so pads are essential. The Incredible Shaking Man sds (Font 7B), Popcorn Party (Font 7A) and Made In Heaven (Font 6B+) are the standout problems. Tidal for the seaward blocs — check tides before heading down the steep path from Uwchmynydd.
