About Raven Crag (Thirlmere)

Raven Crag towers over the north end of Thirlmere. It faces east, so it loses the sun by late morning, and the trees and vegetation around its base keep the air damp. As a result it needs a run of dry, breezy days before the steep walls come into condition, and it's slower to dry than most Lakeland crags at this altitude. Once dry, the classic lines (Communist Convert, Totalitarian, Empire and the harder extremes) are usually clean enough to climb. Less-travelled pitches can be heavily vegetated, though. Most routes are multi-pitch and it stays cool in the shade, so take a warm layer for the belays even in summer. Park near Thirlmere Dam for a 15-minute uphill walk.
